Painting Dark Angels Ezekiel - part two

Hi.

Well, Ezekiel is finally finished. With this model my aim was to paint a model on the higher level then necrons. I wanted to improve my blending a little bit. On the next model I've to focus more on the coat. I've always a little bit problem with metallics and thanks to this model I've move a little bit further with quality of my painting within this field.

If you would like to purchase this miniature for your collection, here is a link to the ebay auction. This little guy is for sale.

Gimiak's Necrons army - part 3

Welcome back to to Necrons outpost.

Today I'm sharing with you my last part of painted models for gaming purpose. So far it's only 50% of the whole army. I must admit that painting Necrons is a pleasure. Even the little guys. Scarabs are made with resin. I've only 5 bases of the plastic ones.

When the next batch of Necron models will be painted I'll share them on the blog.

How to make weathering using oil paints

Hi
Today I will tell you how to use oil paints to do damage, etc.

At the beginning we need to varnish the model with double satin or glossy varnish. This will protect you from unwanted effects on the model, create a shell on which the wash will be better distributed, and most importantly allow us to wipe off the paint when the result will be unsatisfying.
When the model is already varnished, we can prepare the oil paint.
The basis for using oil paint is thinner, I use "white spirit" but you can also use another.
Oil paints give us the opportunity to use them in two ways: as a wash or denser to do damage, splintering and stains.

Used components.

                                                      Elements of glossy varnish painted.

We start from the wash, paint diluted to a very thin consistency and applied on varnished model. Wash will spread freely in the recesses of the model, and the residue can be easily removed using  cotton buds, soaked in diluent.
This is a fairly easy and fast washing technique which gives the possibility to correct the mistakes.
If necessary, you can remove the whole wash.

Ready black wash.

Washed elements.

The second way we can do damage to the casing and other metal components and chips, scratches and stain (I'll talk about stains later)
The advantage of oil paints is that they mix well on the model, and you can create a light structure of corrosion. Rust in nature is not "flat" but slightly convex, and with this technology we can get that effect.
I will not suggest what colors to use because it is an individual thing, it's important to start with the darkest color, which should be quite thick. Oil paint dries very slowly, so we have time to apply a second coat of paint thinner and lighter. What's important is to paint thinner layers, which will allow us to more easily mix with the already placed layer. If you think that the two layers are enough just end at this point. I decided to add in some places, a third layer, the brightest and less dense than the other. for more demanding edges can select the color white or something very light.
Same as with Wash, unsuccessful result of our work, can be at any time removed and then repainted.

                                                                           Step 1
 Only used brown paint.

Step 2

I used a mixture of colors - brown and dark red

                                                                             Step 3

I added orange paint.

Finished parts.

Finally- stains. Making them is not difficult, and the result is really satisfying because of the very natural look.We need to make them lightly thinned, painted in the exact color in which you want them to be, because there will be no possibility to change them.
With paint a small point at the place where you want to begin your stain. Then, take a larger brush soaked in thinner, lightly filtered, and drag from our point of paint towards down. You should get a nice stain. if it does not suit us wipe it, and do all over again.
Length of stains depends on the amount of paint that will do the starting point, the more it will be longer. Really, it is not difficult, you should feel the amount of paint and thinner on the brush and practice, the effects will satisfy you.

Finished elements

If in doubt, just ask.
Have a nice painting.

Painting Dark Angels Ezekiel - part one

Last week I've started painting Dark Angels Librarian Ezekiel. Model from the dawn of time, but it doesn't look bad comparing to nowadays models.

At the beginning I've an idea to try new color on the coat. Which in the end wasn't such a good idea, so I've repainted the coat.. three times. Each time with lighter tones. First aproach was with Snakebite Leather, second with bestial brown (shown on pics below). Dhebab Stone was the last paint  used on actual version as a base color.

Books were painted with the base of Scorched Brown, shaded with black wash and blended / highlighted with Bleached Bone. Power armour was painted with Regal Blue, shaded with black wash and highlighted with Ice Blue. All silver elements were painted with Boltgun Metal and were shaded with Seraphin Serpia, Ogryn Flesh and Devlan Mud washes (in order of painting).

For gold areas I've Citadel Layer: Hashut Copper. Gold paints from GW's range aren't so good at covering dark areas. Hashut Copper was then shaded with Agrax Earthshade. As for the highlights, I've used Shinning Gold and Mithril Silver.

Green shoulder pads were painted with Dark Angels Green, shaded with black paint and highlighted with Snot Green.

So far nothing special here. But for me it's nice to have (finally) a small break. This week I'ce planed to finish this mini at put it on ebay. Next week there will be two updates from my side - Necron gallery and Ezekiel's further painting steps.
